Description
There are those who believe little difference exists between one Asian country's culture and architecture and another Asian country. Actually close observation would reveal many. For example, visiting Chiaya City in Taiwan, I discovered Hinoki Village. An area of several square blocks devoted to Japanese culture. The architecture, the gardens, items for sale, indeed, one can feel a change of atmosphere just entering the village. It was created as a place where Taiwanese can see, smell and taste Japanese culture. Some differences are obvious, others not so much. It is not intended to point out one culture is better than the other, only that there are differences. A line of prayer flags with handwritten messages decorates a simple wood paneled wall. Climate, needs, geography, time, customs and beliefs are ingredients which are baked into an area's architecture.
