Description
It was a bright clear spring day on my first visit to the Heian Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. While far from the oldest shrine in Japan, it and the gardens surrounding the many brightly painted structures combine to make it one of the most beautiful. Even with the cherry trees not in full blossom, there was a cornucopia of visual delights which made my visit of several hours pass rapidly and I knew I would revisit in the future. The traditional Japanese architecture with its intricate wood craftsmanship combines simplicity and complexity, creating many different compositions when examined closely. An example is this wood door latch near the main gate becomes a bold, modern minimalist photo painting.
