Description
A young Taiwanese student lived with us for 18 months. While visiting her in Taoyuan a A young Taiwanese student lived with us for 18 months. While visiting her in Taoyuan a couple of years later, her family invited me to join them on a visit to Okinawa, Japan. Not long after landing in Naha, a rather common site were statues of lion dogs on building roofs. The Okinawan culture believes these “shishas” will ward away danger from houses and protect fishermen while at sea. Throughout Asia, many fanciful dragons are architectural decorations on the apex of temple roofs. A close-up view of shishas, partway up a tiled roof, creates a bold modern architectural abstract painting. Another example viewing the world from a different perspective can result in a renewed appreciation of that which is common.
