Description
Like a box of chocolates, one never knows what is on the inside. This insight from Forest Gump certainly applies to the Jinmao Tower in Shanghai, China. This gleaming modern tall skyscraper is visually pleasing on the exterior, however, after being whisked by a fast elevator to the observation deck on the top floor it is natural to head to the windows to enjoy the spectacular views below. And those views are well worth the trip up. What many fail to do is turn their gaze to a few interior windows where the hollow core of the building is viewable. The architectural pattern created by the floors and balconies descending to the ground is a magnificent visual surprise. So unexpected, so exciting, so memorable. Here Chinese architectural detail has created a more beautiful design inside than outside. While the culture in the United States emphasizes placing the best foot forward, such as the old western storefronts with a tent behind, it is not uncommon in China to experience buildings with mundane exteriors containing lush, beautiful, interiors. Remember in Chinese architecture looks are only skin deep.
