Description
On a gray, on an off rainy day, I hopped on the back of my friend's scooter and traveled the 15 miles to the Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Built next to a temple with a huge Buddha the complex of buildings is extensive. Most of the campus is of modern architectural design. Of course there is an ample amount of traditional motifs everywhere. Looking closely at either the modern or traditional it was a joy observing so much visual beauty. Like Taiwan itself, it is a tasteful blend of past and present, religious and plebeian, private and public. The variety offers art and architecture fans a smorgasbord of moods and feelings. Looking down from a covered balcony, I watched this monk scurry between buildings awash in the rain and sea of architectural patterns created by steps and tiled pavement. May you also have opportunities to be surrounded with the beauty of architectural patterns.
