Description
What would turn out to be two very delightful days of adventure and fun began as the three of us disembarked at the modern train station in Kanazawa, Japan. Greeted not with a large traditional red tori gate but a beautiful architecturally modern wood gate. It was not of bright colors, as a matter of fact, exclusively of stained wood. Monochrome, its beauty lay in the design of shape and form. The geometric pattern on the underside I found intriguing and beautiful. The Japanese are experts in blending traditional and modern architectural styles. They respect and revere their cultural heritage. Rarely will today's needs be a reason to destroy the past. As an example, one of my companions is the owner of a long established restaurant in Kyoto serving traditional Japanese food in a most traditional fashion. Parts of the building are several hundred years old. When a remodel was required the old sections were meticulously moved out of the way while earthquake weakened foundations were repaired and the new sections upgraded. When ready the historic sections were carefully lowered back into place. Just another large expenditure by a small business keeping Japan's cultural heritage alive. I get a special feeling, one of comfort, respect and joy, being in a place proud of and willing to preserve its culture.
