Big Boy Steaming Through Rural Midwest Ohio

For a brief time, the quiet countryside became the setting for one of America’s most celebrated locomotives. Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 traveled through Hancock County during its national anniversary tour, drawing hundreds of residents and visitors who lined the railroad tracks to experience the power, sound, and nostalgia of the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

Although different from my usual rural landscapes, this painting preserves a memorable event shared by the local community. Rising steam, the massive locomotive, and the anticipation of those gathered nearby capture a rare moment when history rolled through northwest Ohio, reminding viewers of the railroad’s enduring place in America’s story.
