These rural landscape watercolor paintings of Hancock County Ohio reflect a quiet, familiar landscape shaped by open fields, seasonal change, and a close observation of place. The work focuses on everyday scenes—often overlooked—where light, atmosphere, and space define the experience more than detail or activity.
Working in watercolor, each painting is approached with restraint. Forms are simplified, edges softened, and color held in balance to emphasize mood over description. The landscapes are not intended as exact records, but as reflections of how these places are perceived over time.
Rooted in Hancock County, the paintings explore a consistent geography while allowing for variation through season, light, and viewpoint. The intent is not to dramatize the land, but to present it quietly—inviting a slower, more attentive way of seeing.
I’ve had a fulfilling 60-year career as a designer and artist, including 20 years with Marathon Oil Company, and while my passion for painting remains as strong as ever, my need to make a living from it has faded. I truly cherish the hours I spend at my “bliss”, and when others appreciate my artwork, it feels like the perfect “frosting on the cake.”
My subjects range from detailed studies of nature and man-made objects to serene landscapes featuring farmsteads, barns, fence rows, and wood lots all inspired by the rural area I’ve called home for my entire 82 years. My watercolors of solitude lean toward mild impressionism, characterized by peaceful and quiet scenes, soft brush strokes, and muted colors. I focus on capturing the beauty of sights that many people pass by without noticing and experiencing their beauty.
I humbly gift framed 18×12 prints as random acts of kindness to residents of the county, along with donations to special causes that support Hancock County.
