Quiet Rural Paintings Inspired by Hancock County, Ohio

Aesthetics

These watercolor landscape paintings are rooted in the rural character of Hancock County, Ohio, where open fields, quiet roads, and seasonal change shape the experience of the land. The work focuses on familiar places and overlooked scenes where atmosphere, light, and space often speak more strongly than activity or detail.

Working in watercolor, each painting is approached with restraint and simplicity. Forms are softened, color held in balance, and unnecessary detail reduced in order to emphasize mood and presence rather than exact description. The paintings are not intended as precise records of place, but as reflections of how the landscape is gradually perceived through memory, observation, and time.

The paintings return repeatedly to the quiet geography of Northwest Ohio while allowing each season, viewpoint, and changing light to alter the character of the scene. Rather than dramatizing the land, the work presents it quietly — inviting a slower and more attentive way of seeing the ordinary rural landscape.

About

For more than 60 years I have worked as both a designer and artist, including 20 years with Marathon Oil Company. While my passion for painting remains as strong as ever, the need to make a living from it has long since faded. The hours spent painting these rural landscapes are a personal joy in themselves, and when others connect with the work, it feels like an added blessing.

My connection to rural subjects reaches back as far as I can remember. I still have drawings and paintings of country scenes from kindergarten, college, and throughout my professional career — evidence that this quiet rural imagery has remained a lifelong pursuit.

The paintings range from close studies of nature and weathered man-made objects to watercolor landscapes of farmsteads, barns, fence rows, open fields, and wood lots inspired by the Hancock County area I have called home for more than 80 years. The work leans toward mild impressionism, using softened brushwork, restrained color, and quiet atmosphere to capture scenes that are often passed by unnoticed.

As a small way of giving back to the community that shaped both my life and my work, I also gift framed prints through random acts of kindness and support local causes within Hancock County.
