Description
A vintage Danish movie poster of ''The Hustler'', a classic American drama film released in 1961, directed by Robert Rossen and based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The film is known for its portrayal of the world of professional pool, particularly the game of nine-ball, and the complex characters involved in it.
The story revolves around the character of "Fast" Eddie Felson, played by Paul Newman, a talented but arrogant pool hustler who travels from one pool hall to another, hustling and challenging other players for money. Eddie's ambition is to be recognized as the best pool player in the country, but his arrogance often gets him into trouble.
Eddie's life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Minnesota Fats, portrayed by Jackie Gleason, a legendary and highly skilled pool player. Eddie challenges Fats to a high-stakes game, and the two engage in an epic match that lasts for hours. The game takes a toll on Eddie, both mentally and emotionally, and it becomes clear that he is not just battling Fats but also his own inner demons.
During the course of the film, Eddie forms a complicated relationship with Sarah Packard, portrayed by Piper Laurie, a troubled woman with her own issues. Sarah becomes romantically involved with Eddie, but their relationship is marred by her alcoholism and self-destructive behavior.
As Eddie's journey in the world of pool continues, he faces numerous challenges, including his own self-destructive tendencies, his pride, and the consequences of his actions. He is also mentored by Bert Gordon, played by George C. Scott, a shrewd and ruthless gambler who sees potential in Eddie but also exploits him.
"The Hustler" is a character-driven film that explores themes of ambition, pride, addiction, and redemption. It is renowned for its powerful performances, particularly by Paul Newman, who received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Eddie Felson. The film also received several other Oscar nominations and won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography (Black-and-White).
Overall, "The Hustler" is a classic and enduring film that continues to be celebrated for its storytelling, memorable characters, and its portrayal of the gritty world of professional pool hustling. It has left a lasting legacy in the world of cinema and remains a must-see for film enthusiasts.
About the artist:
Benny Stilling was a Danish poster designer whose career spans from the 1940s through the 1960s. He had an extremely recognizable style, strongly linked to advertising and reminiscent of vintage advertising of the period. Over the three decades of his production, his style became more personal and modern.
Stilling's posters are characterized by highly marked black outlines and solid graphic elements. Figures of the actors are clearly detached from the backgrounds of their posters. While his choice of pastel background colors, such as powder blues, light greens, and pinks, is also a particular feature in much of his work. The modernity of Stilling's style became most apparent in the 1960s.
