On a hot afternoon I joined a small group of friends for boat adventure on the Thu Ban River West of Ho ian, Vietnam. One stop was a small village known for wood carving. Life here seemed slow and casual as if the inhabitants were content leaving the river and the world flow by. Near the dock, this simple yellow building was perhaps the most colorful structure on the island. Of architectural detail, it has little except for an interesting round window, colored porch and stucco walls. But like a light in the night, it drew my attention. The beach umbrella adds interest and intrigue to the composition as there is no beach on the island. Departing the village, some of those in the group had purchased small carvings as souvenirs and I have a series of reference photos which will be the basis for photo paintings to share with you.

Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture. However, obtaining a degree in advertising design turned out to be an excellent choice. Yet my interest in architecture persisted.
