Our little group had a delightful lunch in a bustling small noodle shop in Wuhan, China after visiting the Yellow Crane Tower. The shop was on a narrow street lined with mostly small older houses and shops. This old wood front door of an abandoned dwelling painted a bright blue was like a little jewel, forgotten, but its sparkle remained. My initial feelings of sadness and loneliness were transitory as the bright colors gave me cheer. Beautiful architectural detail can be discovered in the most unlikely locations. What a contrast this humble door was compared to the huge display of traditional Chinese architectural design and detail I had just experienced and enjoyed at the popular Yellow Crane Tower.

Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture. However, obtaining a degree in advertising design turned out to be an excellent choice. Yet my interest in architecture persisted.
