About Faith
About Richard / His Artwork
From Something Old Company
Our company, From Something Old Company, began in 1991 when Faith combined her two loves of flower arranging and antiques. From something old... something new was created! She rented a space in a local craft mall and enjoyed the creative outlet it provided.
Three months into the lease, she asked her husband Richard to help fill the booth by putting a few things of his own for sale. He decided to develop a relatively inexpensive product, rather than the labor intensive woodcarvings he had been creating. Thus evolved his first paintings on Chinese rice paper. He crumpled them up, framed them and put a price tag of $25 per 5x7 original piece! The drawings were so unique and so well received, that weekly checks on stock found his artwork always sold out!
Within a year, Faith abandoned flower arranging and immersed herself into the realm of print production; Richard abandoned woodcarving and expanded his knowledge in the world of watercolor. During the next 10 years, they grew the business to encompass large wholesale markets, small retail shows and five family members. Today, as in the beginning, the business finds just the two of them working side by side.
Richard's drawings are primarily from his childhood memories and objects from the past, so the business name, From Something Old Company, still relates to the work... and has stood the test of time.

Raised on an 80 acre farm in Northwest Ohio, with five brothers and a sister, made for a fine childhood. Faith's adventuresome spirit took her post-high school to California/Brazil/Florida before coming home to roost again in Ohio, some 20 years later. During seven of those years away, she attended college and graduated "With Honors" from The University of California at San Francisco receiving a Masters Degree in Nursing. For thirteen years, she held a variety of nurse executive positions from coast to coast and in South America.
Following her marriage to Richard, she traded her nursing executive career for co-ownership and presidency of their business: From Something Old Company.

Roots... The world was at war, gold was $35 an ounce, gasoline 15 cents a gallon and the average yearly income was $2,000. The year was 1943, and in the small Ohio railroad town of Fostoria, Richard Neuman was born.
The town, surrounded by miles of rich productive farmland, was a busy distribution hub for industrial and agricultural products. The railroad lines spun their spider-like web of steel rails throughout the town so that all residents ended up living on the "other" side of some set of tracks.
It was in this place that Richard was raised by his hard working parents, an older brother, two younger brothers and for a short time, Spot the family dog. Richard treasures his childhood. The memories cling like Mom's thick, "stick-to-your-ribs", steamy oatmeal on cold winter mornings.
Four miles West down the street where he lived, was a 50-acre parcel owned by his parents. It was there he spent many an hour. He rounded up cattle, fed them, and filled the stock tank with water he drew from the hand-pump. Twenty miles West, as the crow flies, was a larger farm owned by his Grandparents. Many a Sunday after church, the entire family would visit them and every summer Richard could stay for a week or longer. Some of his favorite boyhood memories involve the experiences he had with them down on their farm.
Understanding the importance of money and time, helped him save both wisely. From a very early age, Richard was never without a job. He collected pop bottles for penny refunds and pulled his little red wagon door-to-door, gathering old newspapers and magazines to earn money.
Growing... Most people knew he had raw talent ... he knew for a fact that he had a passion for art. In high
school he studied hard and honed his art skills. In his junior year, he was hired by J. B. Rogers Production to create original scenery and repair damaged paintings on "back-drop" cloths which they used continually in their cross-country theater companies. People who saw his work agreed that he would certainly be going places. And they were right!
After graduation, he left for college with a bag in one hand and his portfolio in the other, in search of a bigger America. He relished the challenges of higher education and graduated "With Honors" from the University of Cincinnati receiving a
Bachelors Degree
in Advertising Design. He soon accomplished a Masters Degree from Bowling Green State University. He worked in a small art studio in Cleveland, then in the world's largest advertising agency in New York City.
The call of the Midwest pulled him home again. He settled in Findlay, Ohio, just 30 minutes from Fostoria. He married and became the father of two sons, Eric and Matthew. Here he designed his first house while designing publications for Goodyear. He spent numerous years working on publications for Marathon Oil Company and several years restoring a large, 1890's brick home. He gave talks on publication design around the country and became an early expert in the fast-paced world of computer graphics. After almost 15 years, the marriage ended and Richard completed the raising of his teenage sons.
As the boys left the roost, he realized a need for change; to set a new direction. The quiet voice within never failed to make him think about his carefree childhood. On December 31, 1986, he resigned from his 20-year corporate career with Marathon Oil Company. He traded the pressures and business clothes for plain Amish-style dress, a straw hat and a simpler way of life. He began to draw again.
Blooming... It was a good decision, and in a few years he made another one. He married Faith Garver in a ceremony held on her Mother's farm near Ney, Ohio. They spent the following year, with help from family and friends, building an entire house structure which Richard had carefully designed. After 10 months of 12-hour days, and another 3 months establishing the gardens, their new homestead stood complete. They named it "Axis Mundi", for indeed it was the center of their world. It was built on farmland that had been in Richard's family since 1840. It was built on the same parcel of land where once stood his Great-Grandfather's tin-roofed homestead, and his Great-Great-Grandfather's simple log cabin. As they were establishing their new home, Richard and Faith purposefully kept reminders of the past around them. Like that pile of Grandpa's neatly stacked, orange-clay field tile; like the spiral lightening rods from the old barn and the wooden corn sheller.
Richard found an inner peace as he came to realize his sense of place. Richard also realized that he was fortunate to have been raised in rural America. Wanting to "give something back" as a tribute to this important part of our heritage, he began to re-create his small-town, farm-life experiences through unique art renderings. He began drawing from his memories of youth and his love of old buildings. You will agree that his artwork allows you to peek into the past to recapture a glimpse of yesterday.
When Richard is not drawing, he and Faith remain busy working on the homestead, "Axis Mundi" or criss-crossing the country each year exhibiting his works in many art and craft shows.
Richard and Faith officially incorporated their business, From Something Old Company, in 1993. Reproductions are made from his originals and prints are in homes in all 50 states plus many countries around the world.
His prints have become a popular and affordable way of collecting memories of a vanishing way of life. It would be a pleasure for them to share his collection with you.

Richard takes about a week to create each painting. He completes on average, thirty originals annually. Several custom pieces for private collections and comercial use are also created each year.
The following six step process is followed to produce every new image:
1.
Research materials are gathered. He takes many reference photos during his extensive travels, frequents the local library, surfs the internet, and often receives reference materials from patrons.
2. Pencil sketching begins. During this stage, the layout and balance of the entire image is considered with only minor attention to details.
3. Extensive detail is then added to the pencil sketch in the form of leaves, shingles, grasses, lighting rods, etc. Textures of all kinds now take form and life.
4. The pencil drawing is transferred to watercolor paper. All the detail is carefully drawn using soft nibbed pens and Chinese brushes. Their softness creates very expressive lines. This human quality is subtle, but the eye immediately recognizes and warms to such non-mechanical work.
5. After inking is completed, Richard adds color. He uses a very limited palette of watercolors: Aureolin (yellow), Permanent Rose (red), Peacock Blue and Neutral Tint. Small amounts of white and black are also used where necessary.
6. The artist then prepares the original for reproduction. By being a self-published artist and having his family business distribute the prints, his unique talent can be shared with others at a very affordable price.
