Temples in old sections of cities frequently become hemmed by new buildings using every square foot of their precious real estate. The Hongwanjis Saki Betsuin Temple in Sakai, Japan is a classic example. The old traditional architecture has been maintained as additions were made to the original structures. Forced to keep expansion within its walls created some most unusual architectural details. Focusing on the many tiled roofs in one corner of the temple made me think of a crazy quilt or complex puzzle. I am not sure if it has any leaks, but it has to be a roofer's nightmare to repair. Its lack of extensive brightly painted woodwork, visually imparted me with a sense of neglect, the temple’s complexity was not welcoming. However, I must admit, my photo painting of the complicated roof tiles is one of life, action, and a bit of fun.

Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture.
