In the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam the yellow post office is a visual treat inside and out. This lamp reveals a bit of the French culture that still manifests itself in Vietnam’s food, language, and architectural details. My brother-in-law was with me returning to “Saigon” fifty years after his deployment to the city. Places we visited included those from his past, The Y bridge where an artillery round came within 10 yards of blowing up his half-track, buildings where he was housed, locations of gun battles, the place where he was wounded, and helicopter out. Much changes over 50 years, yet here and there it did not. It was a joy walking down memory lane with him while still exploring close-up the architecture, sights, and sounds of Vietnam.
Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture. However, obtaining a degree in advertising design turned out to be an excellent choice. Yet my interest in architecture persisted. Twice during my corporate design career I designed and built my own house. Travels allowed visits to noteworthy architectural sites on four continents.
