Description
Early one morning my brother-in-law and I met our driver in Ho ian for a visit to Hue, Vietnam. We took the two lane highway skirting the ocean with mountain vistas of the rugged coast spreading out for miles and miles. Entering the former Imperial City of Hue, we went directly to the Citadel. The walled fortification along the Perfume River was once the center of the Vietnamese government. I was very surprised to discover the size and complexity seemed very similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing. Unfortunately, a major battle during the “Vietnam War” (citizens there call it the “American War”) destroyed in weeks that had stood for centuries. The walls, streets and a precious few temples and buildings remain. The architecture style is traditional Vietnamese. Sadly it reminded me of seeing the remains of a jewel encrusted brooch with only a few precious stones intact. A solemn feeling persisted, left out as if I had missed my train. However, the optimist in me was able to enjoy many beautiful vignettes such as this ornate window looking out over a flower garden in bloom. Sometimes blending nature and architectural design creates something better than the individual parts.
