Unaware of Chinese history, it will be a surprise to discover a large Muslim population and presence in Xian. As a matter of fact they have lived in Xian for countless centuries. A short walk from the Bell Tower marking the center of the old, walled city, nestled among a large area of Muslim shops and open air vendors is the Grand Mosque. On two separate visits to Xian, I spent several hours wandering the grounds filled with centuries old wood buildings. The architectural details are amazing. Patterns abound in the temples and small pagodas intricate wood craftsmanship. I found myself in a peaceful sort of trance, happy, amazed and lingering much longer than expected. May you enjoy a bit of visual pleasure from my series of 12 photo paintings of the Grand Mosque. This is number 1.

When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture.
