There was a certain beauty in this old traditional Japanese temple. Having just walked through a centuries old cemetery wherein are buried over 50,000 monks, I got feelings of mystery and foreboding peering into its shadows and the dimly lit interior of this wood temple in Koyasan, Japan. Then the sun hit these golden lanterns making them gleam against the dark temple. What a visual surprise! Now there was life and color where an instant before only muted darkness. Certain lighting of architectural detail can do this. Narrowing my field of vision created this piece of architectural abstract art.
Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture. However, obtaining a degree in advertising design turned out to be an excellent choice. Yet my interest in architecture persisted. Twice during my corporate design career I designed and built my own house. Travels allowed visits to noteworthy architectural sites on four continents.
