Description
On a perfect spring day, I joined a group, consisting of a friend and six of her senior English class students, for a trek to sacred Koyasan in the mountains South of Osaka, Japan. The small area offers not only the silent reverent centuries-old Buddhist cemetery with the remains of 50,000 monks but a series of brightly painted temples in traditional Japanese architecture, an opportunity to have lunch prepared and served by monks and the sites of a charming mountain village. Such a variety of visual delights created many different feelings and moods. On the winding path lined with moss-covered tombstones and shaded by huge old cedars, I felt hushed, somber, reverent, and a little bit apprehensive. In the village, my mood was one full of life, happy, like a kid in a candy store. Then exploring the beautiful temple, delighted, amazed, and visually on stimulus overload. From one of my many reference pictures, this architectural abstract photo painting was created.
