One of the most colorful temples I have had the pleasure of experiencing is the Todaiji Temple in Nara, Japan. And lucky me, for I have enjoyed two visits. Both times with a small group of Asian friends. The many brightly painted buildings offer a huge variety of breathtaking small vignettes creating architectural abstract art. Even an overcast sky does little to dampen the happiness such a display of color provides. I felt uplifted and excited surrounded by so much visual stimulation. It is interesting that many religious sites in Asia are colorful, yet in the US and Europe they are not. Through my photo painting of a grouping of painted posts and beams, I share with you some of the good feelings I experienced on each visit to the Todaiji Temple.

Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture. However, obtaining a degree in advertising design turned out to be an excellent choice. Yet my interest in architecture persisted. Twice during my corporate design career I designed and built my own house. Travels allowed visits to noteworthy architectural sites on four continents.
