Want to experience roof decoration taken to new heights? (pun intended) The Sanxia Temple in New Taipei City, Taiwan is hard to beat. The architectural detail combines designs, figures, and a rainbow of color. Like frosting on a cake, it covers the structure underneath. For those delighting in things visual, this is like the finale of a huge fireworks display. I arrived on a bright sunny day which brought out the amazing colors. The temple has two stories which allow up-close views of sections of the roof. Normally I am drawn to the beams, doors, columns, spaces large and small throughout a temple. All of these pale in comparison. The beautifully intricate and complicated rooftops them all. (again pun intended)
Architecture and architectural detail have been a lifelong love. As a matter of fact, many of my first drawings and paintings were of barns on and around my grandparents farm. When deciding what university major to pursue, it was only due to my less than outstanding math grades that prevented my choice of architecture. However, obtaining a degree in advertising design turned out to be an excellent choice. Yet my interest in architecture persisted.
